The Heart of the Training Program

The training matrix takes the most time to develop, but once it is in place, it forms the heart of the training program. The key concept is that training requirements are attached to tasks and jobs rather than people.

In the past, training requirements were attached to people. This made for a tremendous amount of work each time an employee changed positions, whether through promotion, new qualifications, or a transfer. All the training assigned to the employee would have to be removed, and new training requirements assigned. All of this would have to be done for each new hire. Even with computers, this resulted in hundreds of wasted man hours as HR or training personnel would have to enter dozens, sometimes hundreds of training requirements everytime an employee's training status changed.

Enter the matrix. Now, all training requirements are asssigned to the job, position, or task. A flexible tracking system, such as our WebSmart system, allows you to assign requirements to all three. NOw all the training coordinator has to do is assign an employee to a job, a task, or a position, and all of those requirements are assigned to him automatically.

A matrix can also keep track of prerequisite training, training updates, changes in curricula that require retraining, and refresher training when required.

The ites in the flow chart detail the development path for the training matrix, and divide the requirements into 4 basic types.

  • Core Requirements-These are requirements that require either classroom instruction or a written test. They are usually performed early in the training path.
  • Required Reading/Procedures-These training requirements deal primarliy with becoming familiar with the operating procedures that cover the task or position.
  • Task Specific Training-These training requirements deal with tasks that may apply to more than one position. FOr example, operation of Powered Industrial trucks may be reqquired by several different positions or jobs. These training requirements are usually met with a combination of classroom or reading, and practical training.
  • JOb Based Training/Qualification-These training requirments are gnerally met through the use of a qualification card, and can contain the first three elements as part of a unified whole.
